1.1 Introduction
Devadatta and Kapila are the two heroes of the play Hayavadana written by Girish Karnad. He was born on May 19, 1938. He was one of the famous contemporary playwright, actor, film director in India. Kurthkoti one of the critics says about Girish Karnad:
“His work has the tone and expression of the great drama. He has the genius and the power to transform any situation into an aesthetic expression. He has imported real dramatic verse to the technique of Indian English drama. This is an abiding contribution.”
Devadatta and Kapila are the two heroes and the youth of the city Dharampura. Devadatta is the son of the Revered Brahmin Vidhyasagar, husband of Padmini and friend of Kapila. Kapila son of ironsmith Lohita, lover of Padmini and friend of Devadatta.
1.2 Compare and contrast between Devadatta and Kapila
1.2.1 Personality
Devadatta is one of two heroes of the play. His name means “god-given” and comely in appearance fair in colour, mightiest pundit of the kingdom in debates on logic and love and the greatest and wit. He is unrivaled in his skills as a poet and pundit.
Kapila is one of the two heroes of the play. His name means “reddish brown” as his skin is dark. He is in deeds which require drive and dancing, in strength and physical skills, he has no equal. He is unrivalled in his physical skills.
1.2.2 Friendship
Devadatta is close friend of Kapila. Bhagavata introduces Devadatta and Kapila as bosom friends. The people of Dharampura remember the legendary brotherhood of “Lava and Kush, Rama and Lakshmana, Kristina and Balarama” they are complementary to each other. “one mind one hears.” For Devadatta he is really fortunate to have friend like Kapila, Kapila isn’t merely a friend for him , Kapila is like brother for him. Devadatta says “one has to collect merit in seven lives to get a friend like him.”
Kapila is a devoted friend of Devadatta. Kapila would do everything for Devadatta. He confess that his parents aren’tas close to him as Devadatta is. If Devadatta says he’ll be ready to jump into a well or walk into fire. Kapila says that he’ll be ready to leave his parents if Devadatta says.
1.2.3 Love for Padmini
Devdatta fall in love with Padmini in her first appearance. He compare her beauty with Kalidas’s Sama Nayika. He says:“ The Syama Nayika-born of kalidasa’s magic description as Vatsyayan had dreamt her…she has become my guru in the poetry of love”
Devadatta also ready to sacrifice his head to Lord Rudra and arms to goddess Kali. if Padmini become his wife. He doesn’t like the idea of the trip of Ujjain. He is concern about Padmini’s health he says: “… It’s dangerous in your condition. but you won’t listen.” After knowing Padmini’s attraction towards Kapila and before beheaded himself he says “…Live happily together…”
Kapila is attracted towards Padmini. He knows that Devadatta is not appropriate husband of Padmini. he always like her company. he is very excited for the trip. so he prepare cart, oxen etc for the Ujjain trip. on the way to janpad Pamini sees fortunate lady’s flower. before Padmini says to Kapilla he goes there and take theme for her.
1.2.4 Jealousy
Devadatta falls in love with Padmini, rivalry start between two . after Devadatta marry with Padmini. he become jealous for the Padmini’s attraction towards Kapila. now he doesn’t like when Kapila visit to his home. he says to Padmini “…you had to hop round him twittering ‘Kapila Kapila!' every minute.” jealousy derives Devadatta to cut of his head.
after misplacement of head and body the question arise whose wife Padmini is? And goes with whom? Padmini goes with Devadutta’s hand and Kapila’s body. Than Kapil became jealous towards Devadatta and Kapila goes to the forest and disappears. He never sees Dharampura.
1.2.5 Life after Misplacement of the head.
After misplacement of head and body Devadatta' head on Kapila’s body. The change in the life of Devadatta for little time. he can wrestling, sword fight, swimming. but after some month his body assuming in its original shape soft and weak.
On the other hand Kapila passes his life in jungle with fragile body of Devadatta. in the beginning he was unable to lift an axe without pain in his elbows. he couldn’t run a length without pain in as knees. There was the war between his mind and . but finally his head or mind wins he successfully gates his body strength and the muscles.
1.2.6 Tragic end
Devadatta follows Padmini to the jungle. he is angry at first but turns steel and calm. Kapila inform Devadatta that his body gave him new feelings, new words, and he started writing poem. Then Devadatta ask him if he loves Padmini Kapila says “yes” to him and suggest.
“Devadatta, couldn’t we live together like the Pandavas and Draupadi”
But Devadatta told him that it is not possible finally. Devadatta give him the solution “what couldn’t end must be cut.” Thus it is very tragic. both of them decided to die both fight in end their lives by killing each other.
1.3 Conclusion
Thus Devadatta and Kapila is close friend. they are individually unrivalled in the skill. one is belongs to Brahmin family another belongs to Ironsmith’s . but their friendship is like brother. both loves Padmini very much cause of jealousy they are derives towards their tragic end.
